The beginning of a story

In the middle of the 11th century, the Benedictine monks built the San Cucufate monastery in the vicinity of the farm. The current vineyards were in the 11th century the monastery farmland.

The monks planted the first hawthorns in this privileged land for the vineyard, a wide variety of fruit trees, aromatic plants, as well as their own garden.

Origin

Around the monastery, a small town was established that once constituted the town of Monzón. The only construction that still stands is the hermitage of the old town, which presides over the entrance to the farm  which was built with the stones of the original monastery of San Cucufate, when the monks decided to move to Santo Domingo de Silos

Over the years, the monastery was renamed San Cobate. From here comes our name, San Cobate.

The witness

Ten centuries later, Antonio Vázquez Muñoz-Calero undertakes an exciting project in San Cobate in 2016 with the aim of making wines that respect the personality of its plots, of its different soils, of the variety of its Grape, the fine red, classic of the Ribera del Duero, giving a discreet paper to the wood of its carefully selected barrels so that the terroir and the fruit are the protagonists of those wines.

Elaboración

Convinced of the respect for the land, nature and climate of the region, Antonio Vázquez, with the unconditional support of his family, has decided to promote the values that must distinguish the future of the winery: effort, dedication, honesty, patience and rigor. With these objectives, they have recovered the vineyards, they have classified the farm in four very well differentiated plots, they have created terraces in the style of the Portuguese “Douro”, and they only elaborate in a traditional way and without haste.
